Recap of First Public Meeting

Thank you to all who attended and made our first public meeting a success! About 30 people from the community showed up, plus kiddos, to learn more about the project and show their interest and support. A good number of those who signed in at the meeting indicated that they would be interested in being on the planning committee. We were encouraged by the turnout and the interest in the school. I think Fairbanks parents see the value in a language immersion program for their children.

We did a presentation to explain the concept of a dual language immersion program and what it can look like, give some information on what a charter school is and also answer the question "Why French?". We also showed the video about Utah's excellent dual language immersion program that we have already posted here on the blog. A link to a PDF file of the presentation and the frequently asked questions can be found at the end of this post for anyone who would like more information.

If you were not able to attend the meeting, but would like to show your support or get involved, please let us know! There is still much work to be done to make this school a reality and we need your support. You can contact us at fairbanksfrenchschool (at) gmail (dot) com.

the Watershed Charter School (4975 Decathalon Avenue).

  • Come meet us and learn about our plan to open a K-8 French Dual Immersion School, beginning in 2014 with K-1st grade
  • Come learn more about dual immersion
  • Come show your support even if your kids are "too old" or "too young"
  • Come ask questions! We would love to meet you and listen to your comments, ideas, etc.
  • Nous espĂ©rons vous rencontrer mardi! We look forward to meeting you on Tuesday!

"So, what exactly do you mean by 'dual immersion'?"

We are so glad you asked! If you want to really see what dual immersion can look like, you simply must check out this video about Utah's dual immersion program, one of the best in the country (if not THE best). It is very exciting and inspiring to see what they are doing in Utah.

This is what we want to see happen in Fairbanks! We are in contact with and receiving help and guidance from Gregg Roberts (the World Languages and Dual Language Immersion Specialist you will see in the video).

Also take a look at the website for Utah's dual immersion program for more information.
